South Cerney Playgroup was started in 1969 by a group of local parents, at Edwards College. In 1979 the playgroup spent a year in temporary accommodation until in 1980 it moved into a second-hand pre-fab building on the present Scout hut site. In 1987 the lease ran out and space was made available on the village primary school site. A new pre-fab was put up in 1989 but deteriorated. This was finally pulled down in 2006 following a large fundraising project that enabled the playgroup to build a permanent, purpose built building in its place. So the playgroup has travelled around the village a little! The level of support received from the local community was overwhelming, everyone was very generous at the various fundraising events. Commitments of support were also received from several local companies. The Playgroup is a much-needed amenity for the village and is very successful. It has excellent contacts with the adjacent school, has visits from outside agencies and goes visiting local places of interest. Its recent OFSTED reports have been good. |
